The Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology (also known as the Hans Kn\u00f6ll Institute [HKI] after its founder) is located in Jena, Germany. Famed mycologist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.leibniz-hki.de\/en\/institut-staff-details.html?member=73\">Prof. Dr. Dirk Hoffmeister<\/a>, head of the Research Group Pharmaceutical Microbiology, will lead the research on behalf of HKI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The collaborative research aims to fill several gaps in the scientific understanding of the chemical composition of psychedelic psilocybin-containing mushrooms, colloquially known as \u201cmagic mushrooms.\u201d Magic mushrooms (and their most well known psychedelic compound, psilocybin) have undergone a wave of new research in the past several years. More recently, magic mushrooms have been decriminalized in several US jurisdictions and Oregon voters overwhelmingly moved to legalize psychotherapy utilizing these fungi in a November ballot measure.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cPsilocybin is just one of many tryptamines found in magic mushrooms and probably not the one with the most potential or the most important effects,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/caam.tech\/team\/andrew-chadeayne\/\">Dr. Andrew Chadeayne<\/a>, CEO of CaaMTech. \u201cUnderstanding the chemical composition of magic mushrooms allows us to quantifiably distinguish their effects from pure psilocybin and harness the advantages.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The research, conducted by Dr. Hoffmeister&#8217;s team at HKI will, among other work, examine the chemical variability within and between magic mushroom strains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMetabolic profiling of these fungi is an exciting endeavor,\u201d said Dr. Hoffmeister. \u201cA more global view on their metabolic diversity has surprisingly not been undertaken yet, but is needed to help us understand their effects more profoundly.
